How To Make a Torn Paper Ocean Craft

Step 1: Create the Sun

  1. Draw and Cut: Start by drawing a large circle on the yellow construction paper. This will be your sun. You can trace around a cup or a lid to get a perfect circle. We then cut out circle in half but you don’t have to.
  2. Add the Rays: Draw several triangles around the edge of the sun to represent the sun’s rays. Make sure they are evenly spaced.
  3. Cut Out: Carefully cut out the sun and its rays. If you’re working with little ones, moms, you might need to help with this part.

Step 2: Create the Ocean

  1. Tear the Paper: Tear the various shades of blue paper into irregular pieces. This part is fun and helps develop fine motor skills. The different shades will create a beautiful, textured ocean.
  2. Arrange the Waves: Starting just below the sun, begin to arrange the torn pieces of blue paper. Layer them slightly to mimic the look of ocean waves.
  3. Glue the Waves: Once you’re happy with the arrangement, start gluing the pieces down. You can overlap them a bit to add depth and texture.

Crafty Tips & Classroom Use:

  • Feel free to skip our free Bible verse template and just handwrite the Bible verse yourself or you can leave it off completely if you would rather.
  • Feel free to use just one shade of blue cardstock! We loved the look of multiple shades but just one is perfect!
  • Once you glue your blue torn piece of paper to your cardstock you can trim the excess off the sides of your paper instead of having to make sure each piece fits perfectly.
